Are You My Mother?

When I began to read the bible with a keener and more objective eye, I didn’t have to read too far beyond the first book of Genesis to realize that what I was reading was the stuff of make-believe. I wondered why so many intelligent people took these stories seriously. I then realized that it probably had less to do with one’s level of intelligence as it did with one’s tradition and fear. Many are simply comfortable believing the stories they were introduced to as children.

Konrad Lorenz, an Austrian zoologist divided two groups of geese eggs by placing them into separate incubators. When one group of eggs hatched, the geese were placed with their mother and naturally began to learn and adapt her behavior.  The other group of eggs were absent from their mother and upon hatching were exposed exclusively to Konrad Lorenz. The geese identified Lorenz as their mother and began following and treating him as a parental bird. Some of the geese even courted Lorenz in preference to other geese. This classic experiment was called imprinting.

This is what has happened to African-Americans as far as religion is concerned. Blacks are Christians by default, being introduced to Christianity during their American enslavement period. Jesus was the first religious image that was seen and consequentially, Christianity became the first “mother” that was followed.  Blacks have been imprinted upon religiously. Imprinting is very powerful and tends to stay with one for a lifetime. It takes an open-mind, fearless heart and trusting spirit to question or doubt certain “truths” about our traditional religious convictions.

Shortly after Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning,” we are bombarded with far-fetched, chimerical stories that only those who have been imprinted upon could accept as true. The following stories would have no place for an otherwise healthy-minded, intelligent and reasonable thinking human being.

God made the grass, flowers and trees on the 3rd day but the Sun on the 4th.
God made “Adam” from dust and “Eve” from his rib.
A serpent tempted Eve in the garden of Eden.
A flaming sword prevented Adam and Eve from going back into the garden of Eden.
God and Cain had a conversation.
Methuselah lived to be 969 years old.
Noah spent 120 years building an ark.
Noah loads predator and prey side by side upon an ark.
The door of Noah’s ark shuts by itself.
Noah was 480 years old when God told him to build an ark.
God sent a rainbow as a promise that he would  never destroy the world again .
People attempted to build a tower of Babel to the sky and God became threatened by it.
God stopped the work of the tower by causing people to speak in different tongues.
God promises Abraham he would save Sodom if there were 10 good men there.

Now, let’s be completely honest with ourselves. Do not justify these absurd stories by claiming that we don’t understand the mind of God or that “God works in mysterious ways.” Take a hard look at what you’ve just read (and this is only in the first few chapters of the first book of Genesis). These stories were written in a time when humans were in their elementary stages of intelligence and people expressed themselves in very exaggerated ways. How long do we want to stay in elementary? We “study” from the same book (the bible) our entire lives but never actually graduate. It’s time we realize that we have been religiously imprinted upon. We are simply believing the stories we’ve heard after “hatching” in the Christian “incubator” called America.

    PEACE IN…
AS A MUSLIM, I AM MEMBER OF THE ABRAHAMIC FAITH COMMUNITY WHICH INCLUDE JUDAISM,CHRISTIANITY,AND AL-ISLAM. I KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS HAD WITH OUR CHRISTIAN FELLOWS IN SCRIPTURAL ISSUE AS WELL AS IN BEHAVIOR ISSUES THAT CONFLICT WITH MORAL RULES THAT GUIDE THOSE CLAIMING FELLOWSHIP AND FOLLOWSHIP WITH CHRIST JESUS. TO BEST UNDERSTAND OUR CHRISTIAN BROTHERS, WE MUST FIRST KNOW THAT CHRISTIANITY WAS ORGANIZED AND PROPAGATED BY APPOSTLE JEWS WHO ACCEPTED JESUS AS PROPHET TO FOLLOW. AFTER DEATH OF APOSTLES AND FIRST GENERATION OF WITNESSES TO TRUTH BROUGHT BY JESUS,LATER GENERATIONS FAIL AWAY FROM ORIGINAL TRUTH AND STARTED TO DRIFT AWAY AND SPLIT WITH ORIGINAL TRUTH AS TAUGHT BY JESUS AND THE APOSTLES. WHAT WE HAVE TODAY IS A CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
LOST FROM THE TRUE TEACHINGS OF IT’S ORIGIN. THE INTRODUCTION OF MYTHOLOGICAL CONCEPTS OF G-D,AS BELIEVED IN BY GREEKS AND ROMANS,WERE ABLE TO INFLUENCE LATER CHRISTIANS TO CONCEIVE OF CHRIST THROUGH MYTHOLOGICAL PERCEPTION;THUS WE HAVE INVENTION OF CHRIST AS SON OF G-D AND AS ONE OF THREE IN A TRINITY – ALL FROM MYTHOLOGICAL IMAGERY. THE COUNCIL OF NICEA(325AD)IS PIVITAL BECAUSE THE DECISION TO EQUATE CHRIST AS G-D WAS OFFICIALLY SANCTIONED BY CHURCH LEADERSHIP. THE TRINITY WAS INSTITUTIONALIZED LATER IN A CONTINUING BRAKEAWAY FROM ORIGINAL TEACHINGS OF CHRIST AND THE APPOSTLES.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT ISSUE IN CHRISTIAN HISTORY IS THE ICON CONTROVERSY CONCERNING IMAGERY. THE COLOR CONSCIOUS RACISM WAS GIVEN EUROPEAN CHRISTIANS BY RABBIS WHO USED THE BABYLONIAN TALMUD TO INTERPRET SCRIPTURE STORY OF NOAH AND HIS THREE SONS – THE CURSE OF HAM FALSEHOOD -WHICH MADE SKIN COLOR AN ISSUE WITH WHITE CLASSED AS SUPERIOR AND ALL OTHERS INFERIOR WITH BLACK THE MOST INFERIOR AND DESTINED SLAVES. WESTERN WORLD COLOR RACISM WAS BORN FROM THIS RABBINICAL TREACHERY. IMAGINE BEING TAUGHT FROM BIRTH THAT THOSE BLACKS WERE CURSED BY G-D TO BE SLAVE TO THE PURE RACE,THE SO-CALLED WHITE RACE. THE EUROPEAN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INDOCTRINATED FOR ALL THESE CENTURIES TO BE WHO THEY ARE;AND, THEY HAVE BEEN MANIPULATED TO DO THE BIDDING OF THE REBELLIOUS JEW – THE pharisaic sadducee mind-set – disbelievers in G-D and enemy to the family of man.
    PEACE OUT…

Afrocentricity does not equal spirituality. I was raised by an afrocentric dad and granted, i learned alot but still lacked a connection to the Creator. I never understood the bible as a young adult and all of it made no sense to me…while on my discovery for sprituality and truth, i did a full circle back to the scriptures. This time, i gained clarity, understanding and wisdom after discovering how incomplete the english translation is and studying Hebraic concepts, thoughts and culture. Truly a blessing to gain insight and grasp the true meaning of the Creator’s word. I agree with alot of Jeremiah’s observations on religion, and i don’t personally subscribe to the new testament writings, but mankind is given the freedom of choice to decide who or what to follow in his lifetime.

How do we or go about substituting our own myths? Any ideas? nature abhors a vacuum. Africans have a long tradition of story telling. How can we resurrect our stories into the community. Any community activist with any knowledge in this area?

The mere thought that someone else was enspired to walk away from, enternal darkness has nearly brought me to tears. This has been a lonely process for me as I’m sure you understand the rejection encountered in the African American community, when you dare to ask any question about The Book.I left Atl to return home to Cincinnati, what a huge mistake;just about everyone here suffers from cognitive dissonance. Thank you for being who you are……………

Jeremiah, I am an agnostic, yet I understand the felt need for religious institutions, because these are places where individual and community come together and participate in rituals, and share stories of stuggles, and victories, and have fun among like minded people. This serves to enrich the individual. Unfortunately most people do not recognise that religion is simply a tool and interpret these myths in a very dogmatic way, in fact, they are seen as the word of God. This causes people give up their right to think and to create. In the African diaspora, the brand of religion that we are exposed to is Eurocentric and unfortunately much of the images are non African, which when taken literally cause immeasurable damage to the African Psyche. I live in Barbados and in my country there is no afrocentric organisation devoted to African spirituality, history, mythology etc. Like most African people most Barbadian want to blend in with the established and loose self in the process. In fact one would be hard pressed to find any one willing to honestly discuss the Bible and its mythological nature, and the self serving message that the Jews enshrined therein. As a person who desires to live with integrity and not deny my beliefs and observations about life and reality. How do I balance the need for ritual, myths, which after being interpreted outside of the narrow views of preachers, still speak to all humans, in the absence of anything homegrown?

Thank You regarding your initiatives relating to historic truths.
Years ago, as a very young boy in the church, I was often made to feel bad because of my questions about many of the teaching about God. Year later I wondered why there was Black Churches and White churches of the same denomination. I wondered why Black Preaches were not allowed to preach in White Churches. Why in Black Churches all the heavenly figures are white.
I feel it’s wrong of us to continue to rest in such a behavior.
    Thank You,
    JLN

  7. Craig D Says:

Mr. Camara, you make excellent observations and I couldn’t agree more. However, if people choose to believe those stories that’s their prerogative, right? I’ve discovered throughout the years that there is absolutely NOTHING that you can say/do that is going to change a persons mind about religion (and politics).

    • pcmiler2000 Says:

True indeed. Closed minded individuals are the most dangerous people on the planet and will kill for questioning their beliefs. I had close encounters with these type of people that I have to back off knowing my life can be in danger.

      • Gilda Says:

I kindly disagree; words of reason from non believers helped me to leave a dangerous, religious cult…I was as closed minded as they come! Thank goodness there were people out there who “planted the seed of rational thinking” into my brain. There was so much information coming at me, at first I thought it was crazy…it took YEARS before that info made question EVERYTHING…and now my life is the better for it. I never, ever would have believed that being free from religion belief in spirits would be so liberating!
